The bolt split a sugar pine deep in a hollow and cut a path along a muddy creek.

From there I emerged, charged with finding one willing to be the light…

Chapter 1

Summer 1965

Grimly - A southern town known only to those who overcame it.

IF YOU DON’T know it’s there, you’ll miss the turn off to Grimly. But you’ll be better for it. Unless you’re one of those who come by train to shop the whimsical boutiques of homespun goods and antiques. Grimly’s old buildings carry visitors back in time to a simpler life, where the greatest pleasure was a cool breeze on a muggy day, and a porch swing. The shops may look charming, and the owner’s sweetness drips from their lips, but don’t be fooled. It’s a façade.

Visitors fill their bags with old trinkets and taffy, and their hearts with envy of those who live in the quaint town. But what the visitors envy can never satisfy them, because hidden behind Grimly’s charm is a darkness disguised as light. For what’s in a man’s heart cannot be seen.

Like many small towns, Grimly has a history. But history is only as good as its facts, and Grimly is not much good at anything, except messing with people’s lives and making up legends to keep out strangers. So, visit if you must. Just don’t miss your afternoon train, and for sure don’t go anywhere near the hollow.
